"Ambroise Paré"

 

This is an original 19th century bronze casting of the famous surgeon Ambroise Paré, who is regarded as the father of modern surgery.  The physician is shown seated in an elaborate chair, with a book, scroll and medical instrument.  The sculpture carries the round medallion stamp by A. Collas and is incised "F. Barbedienne Fondeur".  Paré's name is incised in the column along with the name of the artist Varnier.  Please be sure to click on the "View More Images" link above to see additional views.

 

Although the sculpture stands just 7½" (19 cm) high, it has remarkable detail.  It is finished with the beautiful patina characteristic of Barbedienne's best works.
