"Avant la Course" (Before the Race), by Gaston d'Illiers

 

This elegant little bronze horse was originally sculpted by famed equestrian sculptor Gaston d'Illiers (French, 1876-1952).  d'Illiers was almost exclusively a sculptor of horses, and his work is represented in numerous museums and important private collections.  This sculpture was brought to us for casting by a well-known jockey who called it the finest horse bronze he had ever seen.  Please be sure to click on the "View More Images" link above to see detailed views.

 

We have cast Avant la Course in our own California art foundry using 5 lbs. (2 kg) of pure bronze.  The sculpture is finished with a deep, rich patina in tones of browns.  Mounted onto a marble base, it stands 8½" high by 9½" wide (21 cm high x 24 cm wide).  It is signed "G d'Illiers" and inscribed "Avant la Course" in its bronze base.
