This is a fine antique bronze sculpture by Eugène Marioton (French, 1857-1933) of a young gladiator who faced dangerous animals in the amphitheaters of ancient Rome.  This bronze came to us out of the art collection of the late magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes.  Please click on any of the thumbnail images above to see additional views, and then click on any image to enlarge it.
Belluaire was cast in France in the late 19th century.  It is finished in a classic bronze patina in tones of browns. This bronze stands stands 12" high by 6" wide (31 cm high x 15 cm wide).  The statue is incised "E. Marioton" on the rear of its base, along with its unique casting number of 3700. Condition is very fine.
