Emmanuel Villanis

Emmanuel Villanis (Italian/French, 1858-1914) was one of the most productive and popular sculptors of the late 19th century. His female bronze busts, cast by the Society de Bronze de Paris, were exported from Paris all over the world.

The representation of women, beautiful, young and harmonious proportions, characterizes the work of Villanis. He carved each time with an oval face, long hair, eyes hollow, a short nose and full lips.

Villanis sculptures seem to match the ideal Baudelaire: "Be beautiful and be sad." His sculptures of lovely females often express a feeling of thoughtfulness, detachment and melancholy.
