This is a fine bronze reduction by Barbedienne of the famous Michelangelo marble of Lorenzo de Medici, Renaissance patron of Florence.  Please click on the thumbnail images above to see additional views of this beautifully detailed sculpture, and click on any image to enlarge it.

Cast as Lorenzo de' Medici, wearing the plumed helmet and armor of a Roman warrior, while seated with left elbow resting on a closed money box centering a fierce mask, and hand partly concealing his thoughtful expression.  Lorenzo de' Medici, Duke of Urbino, (1449-1492), was the despotic de facto head of the Florentine Republic, also known as Lorenzo il Magnifico by his contemporaries for his massive expenditures as a patron of the arts during the High Renaissance era. He commissioned Michelangelo to work on his tomb as well as that of Guiliano de' Medici, his brother, from 1520-1534. Both are located in the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo in Florence.

This particular bronze sculpture was cast in Paris in the late 19th century by the famed Barbedienne foundry.  Lorenzo de Medici weighs 20 lbs. (6 kg) and stands 18" (45 cm) high.  The bronze is inscribed "BARBEDIENNE, FONDEUR" and has the A. Collas reduction seal.  It has a lovely caramel brown patina.

Condition is very good, with only some minor discolorations to the patina consistent with its age.  This is a fine bronze sculpture, made to the high standards for which Barbedienne is known.  We guarantee your satisfaction.
