This is a large and fine bronze sculpture by Henri Desire Gauquie (French, 1858-1927).  Please click on any of the thumbnail images above to see additional views, and then click on any image to enlarge it.

The sculpture depicts a victorious warrior standing with a sword held aloft in his right hand, the Roman eagle at his feet.  The subject matter of this artwork may refer to the sacking of Rome by an army of Gauls in the year 390 BC.  The Latin phrase "vae victis" translates to "woe to the conquered ones" in English.

We have cast Vae Victis in our own California art foundry using 35 lbs. (16 kg) of pure bronze.  It is finished in a classic bronze patina in tones of browns.  Mounted onto a black marble base, the warrior stands stands an impressive 31" high by 14" wide (79 cm high x 36 cm wide).  The statue is incised "H GAUQUIE" in its bronze base and is also marked "Beaux arts" indicating  that this sculpture was awarded its top prize by the late 19th century French salon.  We have cast our Art Bronze foundry seal into the bronze base and stamped the sculpture with its unique casting number.

This is a large and fine bronze sculpture, made to the highest standards.  We guarantee your satisfaction.
